Ideas for Selling Goats Locally (and Keeping Them Healthy in the Winter) | Goat Keeper Weekly 11/1/25

Looking for minerals and goat supplies? Head over to our shop at GoatCare.com!

Welcome to Goat Keeper Weekly!

Every so often, I like to share little snippets from inside our Holistic Goat Circle – the funny stories, practical tips, and seasonal reminders that come up when goat owners start swapping experiences. Think of it as a peek into a thriving community of holistic goat keepers helping each other learn and grow.

November brings that mix of muddy boots and grateful hearts – a season for slowing down, tending what matters, and sharing a little warmth with one another.

This week, we talked about selling goats, mineral balance, and keeping hooves healthy through the wet season.

Selling Goats Locally: The Power of Real Connections

Inside the Circle this month, Christine shared such an inspiring story about finding creative ways to sell goats locally – not through ads or listings, but through relationships.

She talked about how joining her local farm bureau opened all kinds of doors: meeting mentors, finding better feed sources, and even connecting with a pumpkin patch that needed friendly, healthy goats for their fall petting zoo. That simple relationship led to happy new homes for a lot of her goats and plenty of word-of-mouth referrals.

It’s such a good reminder that sometimes the best way to find buyers for goats is to step away from the screen and start talking with your local farming community.

Minerals: The Foundation of Goat Health

If you’re part of Herbal Pioneers, you already know how central mineral balance is to every aspect of goat care. The Mineral Mastery course inside that space is one of the most foundational pieces I’ve ever created.

Minerals affect everything – fertility, milk production, parasite resistance, hoof strength, and immune resilience. When things slip out of balance, it shows up everywhere else.

As we head into colder weather, double-check your mineral stations and salt availability. Goats often crave extra copper, selenium, and zinc through winter. If you’d like to dive deeper, the Mineral Mastery course walks you through:

  • spotting and correcting imbalances
  • setting up a mineral buffet system
  • making simple seasonal adjustments for winter health

👉 Curious about Herbal Pioneers? It’s our deeper-dive learning hub where members get guided lessons, printables, and real-world seasonal tools like these. Learn more or join here.

Preventing Hoof Rot in Wet Weather

Cooler temps and muddy conditions create perfect breeding grounds for hoof rot. It’s painful, contagious, and usually sneaks up when pens stay damp too long.

Prevention is everything: regular trims, clean bedding, and keeping walkways as dry as possible. In my free Health Conditions course, there’s a full Hoof Rot lesson that covers both prevention and treatment, including:

  • early signs to catch it fast
  • simple foot-bath recipes
  • natural remedies that support healing
  • sanitation tips to stop spread

👉 Read the Hoof Rot lesson here.

💛 A Note from Megan

That’s it for this week’s Goat Keeper Weekly, where we trade stories, swap tips, and laugh through the joys (and chaos) of goat keeping.

If you ever need quick answers, the Helping Hand Chatbot inside the Holistic Goat Circle is always available – it’s trained on my free lessons and guides so you can get help anytime.

And if you’re ready to go deeper into herbal and mineral care, the Herbal Pioneers community has full lessons, printables, and seasonal checklists to make herd management simpler.

All my love,
Megan

FAQ

Q: What’s the best way to sell goats locally?
A: Start close to home – talk with nearby breeders, farm groups, and 4-H leaders. Networking builds trust and often leads to buyers who genuinely care about animal health.

Q: Why are minerals so important for goats?
A: Every body function depends on them. Balanced minerals mean better fertility, shiny coats, and stronger immune systems, especially through the cold months.

Q: How can I prevent hoof rot in muddy weather?
A: Keep pens dry, trim hooves regularly, and use preventative foot baths if your ground stays wet. You can find my full guide in the free Health Conditions course in the Holistic Goat Circle Community.
