Alkanet is such an interesting plant. I hadn’t heard of it until I began making soap, where I use it as the colorant for purple, but the more I worked with it the more intrigued I became. As it turns out, alkanet was even mentioned by Culpeper, famed herbalist from the 1600’s:
“It is an herb under the dominion of Venus, and indeed one of her darlings, though somewhat hard to come by. It helps old ulcers, hot inflammations, burnings by common fire and St. Anthony’s fire, by antipathy to Mars; for these uses, your best way is to make it into an ointment; also, if you make a vinegar of it, as you make vinegar of roses, it helps the morphew and leprosy…”
This salve is made with pure, clean ingredients and kept simple intentionally: alkanet root infused olive oil; small farm sourced beeswax. Available in a screw top 1-ounce tin.
